“God did not say, ‘You shall not be tormented, you shall not be troubled, you shall not be grieved’, but God said, ‘You shall not be overcome.'”

from the BBC show Rev, when Liam Neeson (God) says to Adam, “I’ll always be here.”

“God did not say, ‘You shall not be tormented, you shall not be troubled, you shall not be grieved’, but God said, ‘You shall not be overcome.'”

Julian of Norwich
Revelations of Divine Love

I love this quote from Julian of Norwich. We often hear her “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.” Love that, too, of course. This quote about not being overcome is at the beginning of the same paragraph.

I love it so much because it says so succinctly and poetically that we as Jesus-followers aren’t guaranteed a trouble-free life. Bad things will still happen to us. BUT we shall not be overcome.

In this video below, Sarah Condon talks about the same thing. Near 23:38, Sarah introduces a clip from the BBC show Rev that demonstrates the same thing.
