Polebridge and Many Glacier

Yesterday was another beautiful day. We decided to drive out to our friends Ric & Lori's house. I felt so bad because I had not told them when we'd be here and I could not get hold of them. We got their address from another friend and went to their house, about 45 minutes away. No one was home, though. Then later in the day I heard from Lori they had been on an Alaskan cruise with no cell phone reception. We'll miss them by just a couple days. Too bad.

After that we went to Polebridge, which Lori had listed as a cute place with a "redneck bakery." I wondered what in the world that could be, but once we got there I could see what she meant. It was a rough drive on a very bumpy gravel road. It was surprising how many people were there, though. It's a popular place from the looks of it. We got a cookie and a glass of wine to snack on while enjoying the view.

Next we decided to go to Many Glacier. We didn't want to miss that since many people say that's some of the most beautiful part of the park. It was beautiful. I read somewhere it's called the Switzerland of Glacier and, although I've never been to Switzerland, it does kind of look like it. No snow-covered Alps, though. The glaciers are receding. Still amazing scenery. I keep singing "How Great Thou Art" in my head. "Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed."

On the way back from Many Glacier we saw 2 bears and a mountain sheep. I managed to get a picture of one of the bears. The other one was closer but the rangers turn on their sirens and tell everyone not to stop on the roads. Sometimes you can sneak in a shot before they get there but no such luck with the bear that was closer. The mountain sheep was walking right by paths that people walk on.

It's a long drive to and from Many Glacier, so it was after 8 PM when we got back to the trailer. I had planned a kind of big dinner with chicken, potatoes, and a vegetable. I made a steak, potatoes, and a vegetable a few days ago. We've discovered, though, that even though I can make that kind of meal, we just aren't hungry enough for that much food. I make a good breakfast for myself every day with eggs and toast, sometimes bacon or ham, and our latte's. After that a small lunch and supper is more than enough. Last night Randy made the chicken on the barbecue and we had that. Maybe another time we'll have the potatoes and broccoli as a dinner.

This morning we let ourselves sleep in and then read after breakfast. A nice lazy morning. It was great. Randy is fishing now and I'm down in the campground office for internet to do this stuff.

A picture of vacationing.

Polebridge Mercantile, with the "redneck bakery."

Me in front. :)

They have a cute little free library there.

A fence on the way. I love old criss-crossy wooden fences.

Some of the sky. So amazing. So big.

Randy by the "fen." Learned that it's not called a meadow because it's wet and swampy. I like the word "fen." Sounds British, doesn't it?

Every so often I'm taking a picture of the scenery and it's like I can't help it - I point the camera at the sky.

Driving to Many Glacier.

Many Glacier Hotel by the lake.

Me by the lake. We walked in to this lake. A guy on the trail said there was a moose there, but we must have missed it. There were people waiting for the moose (plural) to come out, but we had to get back.

On the way back to the car, a deer jumped out right in front of Randy.

View of falls from the bridge by the hotel.

The hotel. It would be so cool to stay there!

I imagine that at one time there were many glaciers here. :)

Bear.

Sheep.

Isn't this a great picture?!
